Welcome to our Festival web site!

Possibly lost at this year's festival, last seen in the Muggery. A pouch containing seven bodhran beaters. The pouch is made of black canvas and is about a foot long with a velcro fastener. One of the beaters has the initials S.R.

Upton Folk Festival 2016 will feature the usual range of great performers - regulars, old favourites and new guests. There will be sessions in the pubs, dancing in the streets and good company and fellowship throughout the town.

22nd April - Outline Programme available

As May Day falls on the Festival Sunday, we are looking for ways to celebrate it in addition to the trip to the top of a hill at dawn - any ideas would be welcomed.

Upton Folk Festival is proud to host five thriving competitions: the Andy Scarf Memorial trophy for Morris Announcements, the southern heat of The John Birmingham Cup for Songwriters (link to page), the Upton In Bloom Duck Race, the Decorated Duck Race and the Demon Barbers Clog Competition. If you would like to register an interest in any or all of these competitions please email your details to Chairman@UptonFolk.ORG and we will provide more details as they become available.

Tickets will be on sale during February 2016 either via this web site or by phone from the Upton Tourist Information office. If you would like further details please email BoxOffice@UptonFolk.ORG

John Birmingham Cup for song writing
CONGRATULATIONS!! The winner of the Upton Heat of the John Birmingham Cup for songwriting 2015 was Dave Collins with Queen of the Midlands.
Dave then went on to win the overall competition at Whitby Folk Week last summer and we are pleased to have him as one of our performers at Upton this year.

Demon Barbers' Clog Competition
MORE CONGRATULATIONS!! The winners of the Demon Barbers Clog Competition 2015 at Upton were Stony Steppers. The competition this year, compered by Damien Barber, was looking not only for excellence but also innovation. The judges, Alistair Anderson and Tiny Taylor commended them for their sense of fun and their engagement with the audience and for the inclusiveness of the routine which allowed the less experienced dancers to complement the stepping of the more advanced members. Alistair also commended them on the use of the different weights of the steppers - or of the stepping - to create variation in the sound - an impressive innovation!! The wonderful prizes have been made by Phil Howard. This year we hope to have some entries for the junior competition as well.

The Decorated Duck competition

During the festival the customers and public raised over £750 to support the efforts of one of our traders, Bijendra Tamrakar, whose family is bringing relief to the people of Nepal in a direct way. One of the Folk Festival’s contribution was to raffle a model of the Festival’s Mascot Coenwulf (a cat with a wooden leg and only one eye). A picture of the presentation of the money to Bijendra by The Festival Chairman (Richard Hannah) and Jo Bowmer who made the model. Further information on the Tamrakar Team.

The winner of the raffle for the miniature Folk Festival Mascot was B. Harries of West Heath, Birmingham
